Chain, belt or wall mount
A chain drive is the workhorse and the cheapest to run over its life. A belt drive costs more and is noticeably quieter, which is what you want when there is a bedroom over the garage. A wall mount unit sits beside the torsion bar instead of on the ceiling, which frees the whole ceiling up and suits a garage with low headroom or storage overhead.
We fit LiftMaster. Our showroom on East Michigan Avenue has units on the wall you can actually run, which tells you more about the noise than any specification sheet will.

The opener is only as good as the door under it
An opener is sized to move a balanced door, not to drag an unbalanced one. If the springs are tired, a new opener will feel fine for a year and then start failing, because it has been doing the spring's job the whole time.
So when we quote an opener we check the balance of the door first. Sometimes the honest answer is that you need springs more than you need a motor.
Chapter 03
Safety reverse is not optional
Photo eyes across the opening and a working auto reverse are the two things that stop a door closing on a child, a pet or a bumper. They are set at installation and they are on the list at every service visit.
If your current door does not reverse when it meets an obstruction, stop using the opener and call us. That is a fault, not a quirk.
