Chapter 01
The unglamorous door that everything else depends on
Hollow metal is the standard for service entries, plant rooms, stairwells, back of house and anywhere an opening has to survive being used hard by people who are carrying something.
A steel leaf in a steel frame takes knocks that would destroy a timber door, holds its alignment, and can be specified to a fire rating where the opening needs one.

Frame, leaf and hardware are one specification
The commonest problem we get called to is a door that was replaced without the frame, or hardware that was chosen separately from the leaf. The result binds, drags on the floor, or will not latch reliably.
Hinges, closers, exit devices, locksets and thresholds all have to agree with the leaf and the frame. We specify them together.
Chapter 03
Block and masonry openings are rarely square
Cinder block and older masonry openings move and were often not square to begin with. Setting the frame properly, grouted and plumb, is most of the job, and it is why a door hung into a bad frame never quite comes right.
On a retrofit we measure the existing opening rather than assuming the nominal size, because the nominal size is frequently not what is there.
